New Build Thatched House in Dorset

A rare example of a contemporary building with a thatched roof, this replacement of an existing 1960s chalet bungalow is on the edge of a village in a Conservation Area and looking over an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Most of the properties in the village are former farm workers’ cottages, which are constructed of rendered cob walls, thatched roofs and Purbeck stone plinths or ground floor walls. Given the challenges of obtaining planning permission for a new build house in the village, and sensitivity towards the immediate environment, a contemporary interpretation of the local vernacular was the chosen approach for this project.

The open plan living/dining/kitchen space is on the first floor to take advantage of the expansive views whilst the bedrooms are located at ground level.
